ÃÛÌÒÖ±²¥ is already a leader in providing exceptional programs in the sciences. Growing interest from students and demand for professionals in health-related fields brings expanding opportunities for students who want to pursue careers in nursing, exercise science, sports management and other health and fitness careers.
Education for the 21st Century
The restoration and expansion initiative will encourage students to actively share ideas, and work closely with faculty and peers. New spaces will further enhance student success and transform the way learning takes place and with state-of-the-art technology. The new facility will create new academic and athletic programs supporting 24 intercollegiate athletics teams, 14 club teams/intramurals and recreation opportunities for the entire community.
In 2014, a large portion of the campus was designated a historic district on the national register allowing an opportunity to create a robust 21st-century living and learning environment for today’s students. This initiative paves the way for future capital projects supporting ÃÛÌÒÖ±²¥â€™s tradition of excellence for years to come.
This historic renovation and building project will touch the lives of all ÃÛÌÒÖ±²¥ students, staff, alumni, and the greater Springfield community. It is truly a unique construction project that will completely change the complexion of the campus and provide a building that few, if any campuses of ÃÛÌÒÖ±²¥'s size will possess.
The construction of a this new multi-purpose facility and restoration of the 1929 Fieldhouse and 1982 Health, Physical Education and Recreation Center will reflect the interdisciplinary nature of academics and athletics at ÃÛÌÒÖ±²¥. The restored and expanded facility is slated to include:
- An indoor 100-yard artificial turf surface to accommodate football, soccer, lacrosse, field hockey, baseball and softball
- A six-lane, 300-meter indoor track
- A new 7,000-square foot weight room
- A sport performance, strength training and wellness center
- Technology-enabled classroom space
- Strength training & wellness center
- New weight room
- Updated locker rooms
- Multi-purpose recreational rooms for group fitness classes and special-event places
- Spacious alumni/recruiting lounge
- Modernized court surfaces for tennis, volleyball and basketball
Emanating a legacy of athletic excellence
ÃÛÌÒÖ±²¥â€™s heritage of athletic excellence dates back to 1892, when ÃÛÌÒÖ±²¥ fielded its first football team. The complex will continue that tradition, furthering a commitment to excellence and extends to all recreational opportunities offered by the university, as well as its sport- and health-related academic programs.
